Chapter 7 - The Beggar in the Rain

As security dragged Gemma out screaming, Andrew stood paralyzed in the center of the room. He looked at me, his eyes full of panic as the reality of his situation crashed down on him.

"Sam..." he stammered, taking a step toward me. "Sam, baby... I didn't know. I swear I didn't know she did all that. My mother told me you didn't care about me anymore. Gemma told me you were cheating on me with another doctor!"

"Get away from me, Andrew," I said, my voice as hard as ice.

"Sam, please!" Andrew dropped to his knees right there on the hospital floor, grabbing the hem of my dirtied dress. "I made a mistake! The marriage isn't even legal yet—we just signed the chapel certificate, we haven't filed it at the courthouse! I can tear it up! We can still get married!"

Zachary walked over, grabbed Andrew by the collar of his suit, and hauled him off the floor with effortless strength.

"Touch her again," Zachary whispered into Andrew's ear, "and I will ensure that every bank, every law firm, and every credit agency in Texas knows exactly what kind of spineless thief you are."

Andrew looked at Zachary, then at me. "Sam... please... my mother took out a loan using the house as collateral. If the accounts are frozen, we're ruined!"

"You ruined yourself the moment you put that ring on her finger," I said quietly. "Now get out."

Zachary's guards escorted Andrew down the hallway. His desperate pleas echoed until the heavy double doors clicked shut.
