Chapter 17 - The Fall on the Witness Stand

Forty-eight hours later, the San Antonio Federal Courthouse was packed to maximum capacity. The grand jury hearing had turned into the trial of the century. Media camera crews lined the stone steps outside, broadcasting live across the nation.
Inside the courtroom, Brenda, Andrew, Gemma, and Richard Howard sat at the defense table, surrounded by a team of high-priced defense attorneys. Brenda looked frail and aged, her arrogant demeanor stripped away. Andrew sat hunched over, staring blankly at the floor.
I took the witness stand, wearing a sleek navy suit, my voice calm, steady, and unshakeable as I laid out the entire timeline—from the morning of Paisley's emergency surgery to the altered hospital logs, the stolen $450,000, and the illegal laundering accounts.
Then, the prosecution called their surprise witness: Gemma Salas.
Gemma had taken a plea deal that morning to avoid a twenty-year sentence. Walking up to the stand in an orange jumpsuit and handcuffs, she looked directly at Brenda and Andrew.
"Gemma," the federal prosecutor asked, "who initiated the plan to alter Dr. Miller's surgical schedules and steal her trust fund?"
Gemma began to cry, her voice amplified through the courtroom speakers. "It was Brenda. She paid me fifty thousand dollars in cash to seduce Andrew two years ago. She said Samantha was too smart, too independent, and wouldn't let Brenda control her money. Andrew knew everything. He willingly went along with it because he wanted her father's fortune!"
"You lying snake!" Brenda screamed, jumping out of her seat in a rage. "You begged my son to marry you! You worthless traitor!"

"Order in the court!" the judge slammed his gavel repeatedly.
Andrew burst into loud, hysterical sobs, covering his face with his hands as his own mother and wife tore each other apart in front of the entire nation.
