Chapter 8 - The Secret in the Vault

Three days later, I was staying at a quiet guesthouse on Zachary’s private estate while the police and legal teams sorted out the fraud cases against Brenda, Andrew, and Gemma. Paisley was recovering remarkably well and was set to be discharged the next morning.

I was sitting on the veranda sipping tea when Zachary walked out holding a thick leather bound folder.

"You need to see this," he said, setting the folder on the table between us.

"What is it?" I asked.

"My forensic accountants finished digging into the joint account Andrew transferred your money into," Zachary explained, leaning against the wooden railing. "It wasn't just your four hundred and fifty thousand dollars in that account. Brenda had deposited two million dollars of her own family trust into it last month."

I frowned. "Brenda? Where would Brenda get two million dollars? Her family business went bankrupt five years ago."

Zachary opened the folder, revealing a series of bank statements and court documents. "She didn't get it legally. Brenda was managing an illegal offshore investment fund. She was using your clean medical credentials and your high credit score to register shell companies in your name to launder that money."

My jaw dropped. "She was setting me up to take the fall for money laundering?"

"Exactly," Zachary nodded. "The reason they needed you to miss that wedding was to execute the final signature transfers without you noticing. If you had shown up on time and signed the standard pre-nuptial agreements Andrew drafted, your name would have been legally bound to two million dollars of dirty cartel money."

I covered my mouth with both hands. Saving Paisley hadn't just saved a little girl's life—it had literally saved me from a life sentence in federal prison.
