Chapter 4 - The Poison in the Records

By nightfall, Zachary had arranged for a private security detail to guard my home and had his legal team secure an emergency court order locking all my accounts from further unauthorized transfers. He invited me to the private wing of St. Luke Hospital to see Paisley.

When I entered the room, the little girl was sitting up in bed, color returning to her cheeks.

"Dr. Sam!" Paisley beamed, holding up a drawing of a superhero with a stethoscope. "Look, I drew you!"

My heart melted, the ache in my chest softening for the first time all day. "You look so much better, sweetie," I said, sititng beside her bed and gently checking her vital signs.

While I was examining Paisley, the door to the room slammed open.

It was Gemma. She was still wearing full bridal makeup, though she had changed into a silk jumpsuit. Trailing right behind her was Andrew, looking pale and nervous.

"Samantha!" Gemma shouted, ignoring the quiet ward rules. "What did you do? Andrew's cards were just declined at the hotel! His accounts are frozen!"

Andrew stepped forward, looking at me with a mix of anger and desperation. "Sam, tell your rich friend to back off! You missed the wedding! You abandoned me! Why are you trying to ruin my life now?"

I stood up slowly, stepping between them and Paisley's bed. "You stole four hundred and fifty thousand dollars from me, Andrew. You married my best friend three hours after I went in to save a child. And you're asking me why I'm ruining your life?"

"We had a deal!" Gemma barked, her eyes wild. "Andrew deserved that money for putting up with your endless hospital shifts! You were never home! You were a terrible partner!"

"Is that so?" Zachary's voice echoed from the doorway as he walked in, accompanied by two armed hospital guards and the Chief of Medicine, Dr. Vance.
