Chapter 1 - The First StrikeCold October wind whipped my hair across my face, but the stinging heat on my left cheek completely drowned out the chill. Mara stood beside me on the terrace, her hands clamped over her mouth as silent tears leaked down her mascara. Inside the glass doors, the jazz quartet had finally resumed playing, a jaunty, swinging tune that felt like a sick joke echoing across the luxury ballroom.

"Elena, you cannot go back in there," Mara whispered, grabbing my bare arm. "Let's get your coat. Let's get out of Chicago tonight. My apartment is yours. My car is parked right downstairs."
"No," I said, my voice steadier than my trembling fingers. "If I run tonight, Charles and Julian win. They narrative-spin this by midnight. I’ll be the unstable, hysterical trophy wife who had a public breakdown."
"They have six hundred people in there who watched him hit you!"
"And not a single one of them moved," I replied, staring down at the dark, churning water of the Chicago River far below. "Did you see them, Mara? The investors, the lawyers, the board members? They didn't gasp in horror. They calculated how this affects the upcoming quarterly earnings report. Well, so can I."
My phone buzzed in my clutch. It was a text message from an unknown number: Ms. Vale, please check the lobby exit. Reporters from the Chicago Tribune and Bloomberg are already gathering outside the river entrance. Mr. Charles Vale’s PR team is claiming you suffered a severe medical episode.
A cold, razor-sharp clarity replaced the shock. For five years, I had played the dutiful corporate spouse. I had hosted charity galas, smiled for the flashbulbs, and quietly swallowed my pride every time Charles reminded me of my "humble background" as the daughter of an auto mechanic. They thought I was a fragile glass ornament they could shatter and sweep under the rug.
They had no idea what was hidden inside the safe behind our master suite artwork.

"Mara," I turned to my best friend, locking eyes with her. "Are you truly ready to help me burn an empire to the ground?"
Mara wiped her cheeks, her terrified expression morphing into a fierce, dangerous grin. "Hand me the matches."
