Chapter 19 - The Legacy of SteelThe following Sunday, I drove my father’s old Ford F-150 back down the familiar south-side streets of my childhood—past the modest brick-front houses, the corner grocery stores, and the hardworking neighborhoods that had taught me the true meaning of resilience long before I ever set foot in a luxury ballroom.

When I pulled into the driveway, the smell of roasted garlic, homemade lasagna, and fresh-baked apple pie drifted out through the screen door.

Mara was already sitting at the kitchen table helping my mother chop vegetables, while my father tinkered with an old wrench by the back porch. As I walked up the wooden steps, the autumn wind rustled the leaves overhead, and for the first time in five years, I felt completely, perfectly at peace.
