Chapter 8 - The RematchTwo days before the jury reached their verdict, I received an unexpected visitor at my new office on the top floor of Vale Tower—a floor that now smelled of fresh paint, polished walnut, and genuine ambition instead of expensive cigars and fear.

It was Elizabeth Vance, Julian’s high-powered defense attorney, who walked in unannounced during my evening review of the new electric vehicle safety protocols. She looked tired, her professional armor slightly dented by the relentless pressure of a losing case.

"May I sit down, Ms. Vale?" she asked, gesturing to the chair opposite my desk.

"Make it quick, Ms. Vance. I have an engineering board meeting in twenty minutes," I replied without looking up from my tablet.

Elizabeth sat down, resting a thin leather briefcase on her lap. "My clients are facing decades in federal prison. Charles has suffered two minor cardiac episodes this week alone. Julian... well, Julian is completely broken. He spends his days staring at the concrete walls of the holding cell, talking about how he ruined everything."

"He did," I said evenly, finally raising my eyes to meet hers. "Is there a point to this visit, or are you just wasting my time?"

"There is a plea proposal," Elizabeth said, her voice dropping lower. "If you are willing to use your influence as controlling shareholder and primary victim impact witness to recommend sentencing leniency to the federal judge—say, reducing their prison terms to house arrest and financial restitution—Charles is willing to sign over his remaining personal estate, including his private island in the Bahamas and his personal stock holdings, directly to your charitable foundation."

I stared at her for three long seconds. Then, a slow, cold smile touched the corners of my lips.

"Tell me, Ms. Vance," I leaned back in my leather chair, crossing my arms. "When Charles stood in that ballroom on my fifth wedding anniversary and watched his son physically assault me in front of six hundred people... did he offer leniency?"

Elizabeth swallowed hard, looking down at her briefcase.

"When Julian told me not to make a scene because my dignity was worth less than his stock price... did he offer restitution?"

May you like

Elizabeth remained completely silent.

"Take your paperwork, walk out that front door, and tell Charles and Julian that I look forward to watching the judge read their prison sentences on live television."
