Chapter 9 - The VerdictFriday afternoon, May 14, 2026.

The federal courtroom was packed to absolute capacity. Security guards stood shoulder-to-shoulder along the oak-paneled walls, and camera crews lined the corridor outside. I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by my father and Mara, wearing a crisp white linen blazer that symbolized a clean slate and a hard-won victory.
The jury foreman stood up, holding a stiff manila envelope. The silence in the courtroom was so absolute you could hear the hum of the overhead fluorescent lights.
"On Count One: Securities Fraud and Wire Conspiracy against Charles Vale, how does the jury find?"
"Guilty, Your Honor."
"On Count Two: Corporate Bribery and Environmental Safety Tampering against Charles Vale, how does the jury find?"
"Guilty, Your Honor."
"On Count Three: Assault, Obstruction of Justice, and Intimidation against Julian Vale, how does the jury find?"
"Guilty, Your Honor."
Across the aisle, Charles closed his eyes, his head bowing low toward his chest as the reality of his life sentence settled over him like a lead shroud. Julian didn't look down; instead, his bloodshot eyes locked onto mine across the courtroom.
There was no anger left in his gaze. Only a terrifying, haunting realization of what he had thrown away for the sake of pride, power, and performance.
The judge slammed his gavel down—a sharp, final crack that echoed like a gunshot through the historic room.
"Charles Vale, you are hereby sentenced to twenty-five years in federal prison without the possibility of parole. Julian Vale, you are hereby sentenced to twelve years in federal prison. Court is adjourned."
As the federal marshals stepped forward to slap the heavy steel cuffs onto Julian’s wrists, he whispered two words across the courtroom aisle, reading them from my lips as I stood up to leave:
