Chapter 6 - The SubpoenaThursday morning arrived with a biting frost that coated the Chicago sidewalks in a thin layer of silver ice. The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois was a fortress of limestone and granite, surrounded by a dense sea of camera crews, boom microphones, and reporters shouting questions across the barricades.

I stepped out of the back of my father’s Ford F-150 wearing a tailored navy wool coat, my head held high, my stride steady and unhesitating. Flashbulbs erupted like a violent thunderstorm, illuminating the faint, fading yellow bruise still lingering on my left cheek—a permanent reminder of the exact moment my old life had died.

Inside the grand marble lobby, federal marshals escorted me past the metal detectors directly toward the grand jury chambers on the third floor.

As I rounded the corner near the witness waiting area, I came face-to-face with them.

Charles and Julian sat side-by-side on a wooden bench. Gone were the tailored Italian suits and smug, untouchable grins. Charles wore a standard orange-trimmed detention jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to a steel chain around his waist. Julian looked like a ghost—his skin gray, his eyes hollow, his expensive designer jacket wrinkled and unbuttoned.

For a fraction of a second, Julian looked up, his eyes meeting mine. In that look, there was no anger left, no arrogance, no entitlement—only a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy.

"Elena," he whispered, his voice cracking as he instinctively started to stand up, before the heavy iron chain on his waist yanked him back down onto the bench with a harsh, metallic rattle.

I didn't stop. I didn't slow my pace. I didn't offer a single word of comfort or condemnation. I simply looked right through him, as if he were nothing more than empty air, and walked straight past the bench toward the double doors of the grand jury room.

"Mrs. Vale," a federal prosecutor greeted me warmly, holding open the door. "We’re ready when you are. Whenever you'd like to begin, take us through the night of October 14th."

I took a deep, steady breath, stepped into the room, and began to speak.
