Chapter 10 - The HorizonThree months later, the sun broke brilliantly over the Chicago skyline as I stood on the very same terrace of The Langham hotel where my old life had shattered into a million pieces.

The air was crisp and clear, carrying the fresh scent of autumn and river mist. Below me, traffic moved smoothly along Wacker Drive, and the city hummed with its usual tireless energy—only this time, the city wasn't ignoring my reality; it was cheering for it.

Mara walked out onto the terrace holding two crystal glasses filled with sparkling apple cider, handing one to me with a brilliant toast-worthy grin.

"To the new CEO of Vale Global Motors," Mara said, clinking her glass against mine. "The first female chief executive in the history of the company, and the woman who single-handedly re-engineered Detroit."

"To truth over performance," I replied, taking a sip and looking out over the magnificent skyline of the city I had reclaimed.

My phone buzzed in my coat pocket. I pulled it out, expecting another corporate briefing or a legal update from our general counsel. Instead, it was an alert from the financial wire services: Vale Global Motors stock surges 45% following successful restructuring, union partnership announcement, and historic zero-emission vehicle rollout.

My father walked out onto the terrace, wiping grease from his hands with a shop towel, smiling proudly as he looked at the glittering city below. "Looking good, Ellie. But you’ve still got motor oil on your blazer."

I looked down at the faint dark smudge on my white sleeve, laughed out loud, and didn't bother to wipe it off.

It was the best stain I had ever earned.
