Yet, a lingering loose end remained.
I sat in my corner office on a crisp autumn evening, looking out over the Chicago River as twilight painted the skyline in shades of amber and violet. My phone rang with an unlisted number from the Indiana state penitentiary system.
"Collect call from an inmate," an automated robotic voice announced. "To accept, press one."
I pressed one.
"Elena?" Julian’s voice sounded thin, raspy, and utterly hollow—stripped of all the arrogance and polish that had once defined him.
"I'm here, Julian," I said, my voice steady and completely devoid of emotion.
"I heard about the new car launch," he whispered, a weak cough escaping his throat. "Dad had a massive stroke last week. He’s... he’s not going to make it out of here."
"I'm sorry to hear that," I answered honestly, feeling neither joy nor sorrow, only a profound sense of closure.

"Because I didn't need to destroy your name, Julian," I looked at my reflection in the glass, noticing the faint, invisible scar where his hand had once struck me five years ago. "I just needed to show the world that I was never part of it."
