Chapter 11 - The Secret Trust

The heavy oak doors of the downtown Providence bank vault clicked open, releasing a faint puff of chilled air that smelled of old parchment and polished steel. Corbin stood beside the bank manager, watching as a heavy deposit box—sealed four decades ago under an administrative code—was slid onto the mahogany review table.

Inside lay not just documents, but a physical ledger containing the personal journal of Julian Vance.

Lianna had chosen to stay behind at the foundation office that afternoon, but the weight of her late husband’s past was about to be fully brought to light. Corbin turned the pages carefully. Each line written in Julian’s meticulous cursive detailed the systematic coercion applied by Robert Stanford. There were dates, names of bribed city inspectors, and receipts of silent payments meant to bury structural flaws deep beneath the city's concrete.

Julian hadn't been a thief. He had been a whistleblower before the term even carried legal protection.

Corbin pulled his phone from his pocket and dialed Marcus Sterling’s private line. The aging attorney answered on the first ring, his voice subdued and cautious.

"Marcus," Corbin said, running his thumb over the edge of Julian's journal. "We found the missing ledger pages from 1988. Every single asset my father stripped from Julian’s estate is going back to Lianna and Austin by tomorrow morning. I want the legal transfer executed publicly."

"Publicly, Corbin?" Sterling gasped over the line. "That will trigger a federal grand jury investigation into the entire foundational capital of Stanford Development. You could lose everything."

"Then let it burn down to the studs, Marcus," Corbin replied, his voice steady and cold. "What isn't built on the truth deserves to fall."
