Chapter 21 - The Anniversary of the Blue Envelope

The rain tapped softly against the glass panes of the kitchen window, exactly five years to the day since Corbin had first stood in that exact spot and overheard Lianna whispering a plea for twenty-eight dollars.

The old metal lockbox no longer sat battered on a peeling table; it rested securely inside a glass display case at the Julian Vance Foundation library downtown, a permanent reminder of how close an empire had come to total moral collapse. But inside the estate kitchen, life was warm, grounded, and entirely real.

Lianna stood by the stove, flipping pancakes while fourteen-year-old Austin—now a lanky, sharp-minded teenager with a passion for building electronics—rushed through the doorway with his backpack slung over one shoulder.

"Mom, have you seen my physics textbook? The science fair prototype is due first period!" Austin called out, grabbing a piece of fruit off the counter.

"Check the oak desk in the library, sweetie. You left it there last night," Lianna replied smoothly, handing him a packed lunch container.

Corbin stepped into the kitchen, wearing a comfortable flannel shirt instead of his old tailored suits. He walked up behind Lianna, wrapping his arms around her waist and pressing a warm kiss to her cheek.

"Happy anniversary," Corbin murmured softly.

Lianna paused, smiling as she turned in his embrace. "Five years. Sometimes it feels like another lifetime entirely."

"It was another lifetime," Corbin corrected, looking down into her eyes with unwavering devotion. "That person who walked the halls of this house five years ago didn't know what life actually was. You taught me how to see."

Austin cleared his throat loudly from the doorway, holding up his physics book with an amused grin. "Okay, lovebirds, save the corporate philosophy for later. I need a ride to school, or the foundation bus is leaving without me!"
