Chapter 17 - A New Chapter Begins

Two weeks later, the sprawling stone estate outside Providence looked entirely different.
The heavy iron gates had been permanently unlocked. No longer guarded by private security and closed off from the world, the expansive gardens were now open to the public on weekends, serving as a community park and learning center funded by the Julian Vance Foundation.
The main manor house had been divided: the west wing housed the foundation’s headquarters, where Lianna directed housing grants for working-class single mothers across New England, while the east wing had been converted into a cozy, sunlit family home.
On a crisp Saturday afternoon, Corbin sat on the back patio with a wooden drafting board across his knees, sketching out blueprints for affordable, sustainably built multi-family housing units—a far cry from the luxury skyscrapers he used to build.
Lianna walked out onto the stone patio carrying two mugs of steaming coffee, setting one down beside him.
"You're going to ruin your posture hunched over like that," she teased gently, leaning against the stone balustrade to look out over the gardens where children were playing near the fountain.
"An architect never ruins his posture, he merely adjusts to the load-bearing requirements," Corbin smiled, setting his pencil down.
Lianna laughed—a bright, warm sound that completely chased away the lingering ghosts of the past. She looked down at his sketches. "These are actually beautiful, Corbin. They look like real homes. Places where people can actually afford to raise a family without counting every single dollar."
"Well," Corbin said softly, looking up into her eyes, "I had a very good teacher who showed me what twenty-eight dollars could really mean."

Lianna’s smile softened into something tender and profound. She reached out, intertwining her fingers with his.
The shadow of the past was gone, replaced by a foundation built to last.
