Chapter 18 - The Unexpected Letter
The autumn leaves had completely fallen by late November, leaving a crisp, golden carpet across the estate grounds.
On a quiet Tuesday morning, a plain white envelope arrived in the daily mail delivery. It bore no return address, only a handwritten Providence postmark.
Lianna was sitting at the kitchen island helping little Austin color in a picture book when Corbin walked in holding the envelope. He turned it over in his hands, noticing the thick, high-rag paper—the exact kind used by the Rhode Island State Supreme Court archives.
"What is it?" Lianna asked, looking up from the table.
"I'm not sure," Corbin said, sliding a finger under the sealed flap. He pulled out a single sheet of heavy cream paper.
At the top was the official seal of the state judiciary.
As his eyes scanned the text, his breath hitched.
“To Whom It May Concern: Pursuant to the posthumous exoneration review of Julian Vance, and upon submission of newly recovered corporate ledger evidence confirming systemic coercion and frame-up by Robert Stanford, the State of Rhode Island hereby vacates all prior administrative findings of financial misconduct. Julian Vance’s legal record is officially declared fully restored, unblemished, and honored with the State Citizen Citation for Integrity.”
Corbin stared at the paper in stunned silence. He slowly lowered his hands, looking across the island at Lianna.
