Chapter 19 - The Memorial Tree

The following weekend, under a clear, pale blue sky, a small gathering of close friends, foundation workers, and community members stood on the front lawn of the estate.
At the center of the garden, right where the old cobblestone pathway met the grand fountain, a young, sturdy oak sapling had been planted.
Lianna knelt beside the damp soil, gently patting the earth around the roots with her bare hands. Corbin stood right behind her, his hand resting securely on her shoulder, while little Austin clutched a small plastic watering can, eagerly splashing water onto the base of the tree.
A small bronze plaque rested against the stone border at the base of the oak.

"He would have loved this," Lianna whispered, wiping a tear from her cheek as she stood up and leaned back against Corbin’s chest.

The wind rustled through the bare branches of the surrounding trees, carrying away the last remnants of a bitter, tragic past, and leaving behind the quiet, unbreakable promise of a new morning.
