Chapter 22 - The National Honor

The grand ballroom of the Rhode Island State Capitol was packed to capacity. Dignitaries, community organizers, single parents, and civil rights advocates filled the velvet-seated auditorium, their murmurs bouncing off the high gilded ceilings.

At the podium stood the Governor of Rhode Island, smiling warmly as he opened a heavy leather folder.

"For decades, the name Stanford was associated with corporate power and unyielding ambition," the Governor announced into the microphone, his voice echoing through the hall. "Today, we honor a transformation. We honor an institution that chose accountability over concealment, and truth over convenience."

The spotlight swept across the front row, landing directly on Lianna Prescott-Stanford and Corbin.

"For her tireless advocacy, her unyielding resilience, and her leadership in establishing the Julian Vance Foundation—which has protected over ten thousand families from housing displacement and financial crisis—we proudly present the State Citizen of the Year Award to Lianna Stanford."

A thunderous roar of applause erupted through the ballroom. People stood up row by row, clapping and cheering as Lianna stared in stunned disbelief, her hand flying to her mouth.

Corbin beamed with pride, gently urging her forward toward the stage.

As Lianna stood at the mahogany podium, holding the heavy crystal plaque, she looked out over the sea of faces—many of them single mothers who had once faced the same terrifying midnight calculations she had endured years ago.

"My late husband, Julian, believed that a society is measured not by the height of its skyscrapers, but by the safety of its most vulnerable homes," Lianna spoke into the microphone, her voice steady, clear, and resonant. "This honor doesn't belong to me. It belongs to every single person who refuses to look away when a neighbor whispers in the dark."
