Chapter 14 - The Chase on the Runway

The tarmac at T.F. Green Airport gleamed like dark obsidian under the halogen floodlights, slick with sheets of wind-driven rain. A twin-engine Gulfstream jet sat idle near the private hangar, its turbines whining with a deafening, high-pitched shriek as it prepared to taxi toward the active runway.

Corbin’s black SUV tore through the security gate barrier, the metal arm snapping like a toothpick as the vehicle fishtailed across the wet asphalt, cutting directly across the path of the moving jet.

The pilot flashed the landing lights in blind panic, slamming on the brakes. The jet ground to a halt with a deafening screech of skidding rubber.

Before the engines could even wind down, Corbin threw his door open, leaped out into the torrential downpour, and sprinted toward the aircraft’s mobile stairs.

A private security guard rushed out of the cabin door, holding up his hands. "Sir, you cannot be here! Private property—"

Corbin didn't slow down. He shoved past the guard with brute force, stormed up the aluminum stairs, and threw open the cabin door.

Sitting in the plush leather interior, sipping a glass of scotch while surrounded by open briefcases stuffed with bearer bonds and passport documents, was Donald Vance.

Donald froze, his glass halfway to his mouth. "Stanford? Have you lost your mind? Security! Get this lunatic off my plane!"

"The only place you're going, Donald, is a federal holding cell," Corbin said, stepping into the cabin, water dripping from his shoulders onto the pristine carpet. He pulled out his phone, dialed a pre-programmed direct line to the FBI’s Providence field office, and hit speakerphone. "Agent Miller? This is Corbin Stanford. I am currently standing on a private jet at T.F. Green Airport with a flight risk attempting to flee the country with millions in embezzled assets. Arrest warrant execution is authorized immediately."

Donald dropped his scotch glass. It shattered against the floor, amber liquid splashing across his expensive Italian leather shoes as federal sirens began wailing in the distance outside the hangar.
