Chapter 11 - The Inheritance of Shadows

The spring air in Manhattan carried the scent of wet pavement and blossoming lilacs, but inside the executive suite of Donovan Holdings, the atmosphere was thick with the scent of old paper and unresolved history. Emily sat behind a massive mahogany desk that had once belonged to her grandfather, reviewing the quarterly portfolio reports of the newly restructured foundation.
Her phone buzzed against the blotter.
An unknown number. Local area code.
Emily stared at the screen for three seconds before swiping to answer. "Hello?"
"You think you won, don't you?"
The voice was raspy, thin, and hollow—a voice that sounded like it had been scraped across concrete. It wasn't Ethan. It was Jocelyn Cole.
Emily didn't flinch. The panic that once would have seized her chest was gone, replaced by a cold, hardened armor. "Jocelyn. I thought you were living in a motel in Queens."
"We lost everything because of you," Jocelyn hissed, her voice trembling with venom. "Ethan's locked away like an animal, our home is gone, and you're sitting in a luxury high-rise playing corporate executive. But blood remembers, Emily. You can't erase who you are. A peasant from the gutter will always be a peasant."
Emily closed the portfolio deliberately, the sharp slap of leather against wood echoing through the quiet office.

"You're right about one thing, Jocelyn," Emily said softly, her voice steady and razor-sharp. "Blood does remember. It remembers every meal I cooked while you insulted me. It remembers every dollar Ethan stole and every lie you co-signed. If you ever call this number again, I won't just block it—I'll have Victoria Vance file criminal harassment charges that will make sure you share a cell with your son."
She hung up without waiting for an answer.
