Chapter 16 - The Cavalry Arrives

Emily stared at Julian, disgusted not just by his arrogance, but by the casual cruelty with which he bartered human lives.

"You think I care about Jocelyn?" Emily asked, her voice dropping to a cold, steady whisper. "You think threatening me with a desperate, broken old woman gives you leverage? You don't know anything about me, Julian."

Julian’s smirk faltered for a fraction of a second. "You're playing a dangerous game, little girl. Harold won't protect you forever. He's old. His heart is weak. When he goes, you'll be entirely alone."

"She is not alone."

The deep, gravelly voice echoed from the private elevator foyer.

The private elevator doors slid open with a soft chime. Harold Donovan stepped out, leaning heavily on his cane, flanked not by ordinary security guards, but by four federal marshals in full tactical gear, led by Sergeant Miller.

Julian’s face finally lost its color. He spun around, his eyes widening. "Harold... how did you—"

"Did you really think I wouldn't secure my own building against a snake like your father's son?" Harold asked, his blue eyes burning with cold fury. "Arthur Brooks taught me how to spot a vulture fifty years ago, Julian. And you fly just like your old man."

Sergeant Miller stepped forward, pulling a pair of steel cuffs from his belt. "Julian Vance, you are under arrest for corporate espionage, illegal surveillance, and B&E of a federal protected witness."

Julian tried to maintain his composure, raising his hands as the cuffs clicked into place. He looked past the marshals, locking his eyes onto Emily one last time.

"You think this is over?" Julian sneered as he was dragged toward the elevator. "The waterfront is tied up in federal court battles you don't even know exist!"

"Let him talk," Harold said quietly as the doors closed, sealing Julian away.
