Chapter 12 - The Stranger at the Gallery

Two weeks later, Emily attended a charity art gala hosted by the Donovan Foundation at a sprawling Tribeca gallery. The room hummed with the quiet chatter of New York’s elite, champagne flutes clinking against crystal, classical string quartets playing softly in the corner.
Emily stood near a large abstract canvas, wearing a tailored emerald-green silk gown that commanded the room without asking for permission.
"You clean up rather well for a girl who used to grade elementary school spelling tests," a smooth, cultured voice murmured from behind her.
Emily froze. She turned around slowly.
Standing a few feet away was a man in his late forties, wearing a bespoke charcoal tuxedo. He had silver-streaked dark hair, piercing amber eyes, and a smile that didn't reach his eyes. He looked wealthy—dangerously wealthy—in a way that felt entirely different from Harold Donovan’s old-money authority. This man possessed the sharp, predatory edge of corporate raiders.
"I'm sorry," Emily said, her brow furrowing. "Do I know you?"
"Not yet," the man replied, lifting his champagne flute in a silent toast. "Julian Vance. No relation to your fierce corporate counsel Victoria, I assure you. Though we run in similar, expensive circles."
Emily’s eyes narrowed slightly. "Vance. As in Vance Global Capital?"
"The very same," Julian smiled, stepping closer. "I've been watching your little corporate metamorphosis, Emily. Taking down Ethan Cole was a masterpiece of legal engineering. Though, I must admit... I'm much more interested in the man behind you."
"Mr. Donovan is a private person," Emily said coldly.

"Of course he is," Julian laughed softly. "Old Harold loves his secrets. But secrets have expiration dates, Mrs. Brooks. Or should I say... Miss Brooks?"
Before Emily could answer, a heavy hand rested firmly on her shoulder. She looked back to see Harold standing beside her, his face carved from granite, his blue eyes locked onto Julian with undisguised hostility.
