Chapter 18 - Rebuilding the Throne

Three months later.

The spring warmth had given way to the vibrant heat of early summer in New York City.

Inside the grand boardroom of Donovan Holdings on the fifty-fifth floor, the board of directors sat in absolute silence. At the head of the polished mahogany table sat Emily Brooks, wearing a sharp, tailored navy suit, her posture immaculate, her expression serene and unyielding.

To her right sat Harold Donovan, attending his final board meeting as chairman emeritus before stepping down to enjoy a well-earned retirement.

"The acquisition of the Queens waterfront redevelopment zone is officially complete," Victoria Vance announced, standing at the head of the digital projection screen. "With the majority proxy shares controlled by Miss Brooks, Donovan Holdings is now the undisputed leader in commercial real estate development in the tri-state area."

Polite, respectful applause rippled through the room.

None of the corporate executives who had once looked down on her as Ethan Cole’s pawn dared to meet her eyes with anything less than absolute deference. They knew what she had survived. They knew what she had conquered.

When the meeting adjourned, the board members filed out of the room one by one, leaving only Emily and Harold behind.

Harold stood up slowly, leaning on his cane, and offered her a warm, proud smile.

"Well, Madam Chairman," Harold chuckled. "I think your grandfather would say you've done quite well for yourself."

Emily stood up, walking around the table to embrace the old man gently. "I only survived because you built a ladder out of the dark, Harold."

"No, Emily," Harold corrected softly, patting her shoulder. "I only showed you the door. You were the one who had the courage to walk through it."
