Chapter 6 - The New Lease on Life

Three days later, the rain over Westchester County finally cleared, replaced by a brilliant, crisp autumn sun that flooded the sprawling lawns of the Donovan estate.

Inside the bright, sunlit solarium overlooking the rose gardens, Emily sat in a comfortable velvet armchair, sipping chamomile tea. Across from her sat Dr. Sarah Evans, the chief oncologist from St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, along with Harold Donovan.

"The initial round of targeted immunotherapy began yesterday morning, Emily," Dr. Evans said, offering a reassuring smile. "Your mother's vitals are remarkably stable. The tumor markers are already showing a positive response to the new peptide compounds. With twenty-four months of fully funded care secured, I can tell you with absolute confidence—she's going to beat this."

Emily closed her eyes, a heavy sob of relief escaping her lips. She covered her face with her hands, letting out months of accumulated grief, terror, and exhaustion.

Harold reached across the small glass table, placing his weathered hand over hers. "Take a breath, my dear. The hard part is behind you."

Emily wiped her eyes, looking up at the old man with a gaze full of fierce, unbreakable gratitude. "I don't even know how to begin to repay you, Mr. Donovan. The lawyers, the hospital, the security... this must have cost a fortune."

"Consider it an investment in family," Harold chuckled softly, leaning back in his chair. "Your grandfather and I built Donovan Holdings from a single lumber yard in Queens. We swore an oath that no matter what happened, we would always look out for each other's blood. You are family now, Emily. Whether you like it or not."

"I like it," Emily whispered, a genuine smile breaking across her face for the first time in three years. "I like it very much."

"Good," Harold said, standing up with the help of his cane. "Because Victoria is waiting in the study. There's the small matter of finalizing your name change back to Brooks, formally dissolving the fraudulent marriage contract, and transferring ownership of Ethan's former assets—which were seized by the court and redirected into the foundation—directly into your name."

Emily blinked. "My name?"

"Every last cent of that two million dollars Ethan thought he was selling you for," Harold said with a wicked twinkle in his eye, "is now sitting in a trust fund bearing your mother's name. You are a very wealthy woman, Emily Brooks. And more importantly, you are entirely free."
