Chapter 7 - The Final Signature

Inside the study, the morning sun poured through the massive arched windows, illuminating the rows of leather-bound books. Victoria Vance sat behind the polished mahogany desk, holding a sleek gold fountain pen.
Emily walked in, her posture straight, her head held high. She was no longer the terrified woman who had stepped out of a black sedan three nights ago wearing a borrowed dress and carrying the crushing weight of despair.
She wore a simple, elegant navy blue blazer and dark trousers—clothes she had chosen herself.
"Ready, Emily?" Victoria asked, sliding a thick stack of legal documents across the desk.
"More than ready," Emily said.
She sat down, took the gold pen, and began signing her name across the dotted lines.
Emily Brooks.
The signature was clean, firm, and unyielding. Every stroke of the pen felt like driving a stake through the ghost of her past marriage.
"Done," Victoria announced, closing the portfolio with a satisfying snap. "The divorce is absolute. The assets are secured. Ethan Cole is currently sitting in a federal holding cell facing up to fifteen years for wire fraud and embezzlement. And your mother's medical fund is completely locked down and untouchable."
Emily set the pen down, leaning back in the leather chair as a profound, unshakable peace settled over her soul.
"What about Jocelyn?" Emily asked quietly.

"Her apartment was foreclosed yesterday, as it was tied to Ethan's fraudulent corporate loans," Victoria replied without a hint of sympathy. "She's currently trying to sell her designer handbags on consignment to pay for a cheap motel room in Queens. Karma, it turns out, has an exquisite sense of timing."
Emily nodded slowly. She didn't feel joy at Jocelyn's downfall, only a profound, distant indifference. They no longer existed in her world.
