Chapter 17 - The Final Truth

Silence settled back over the penthouse. The security jam lifted, and the soft amber lamps flickered back to full power.

Harold walked slowly toward the desk, leaning heavily on his cane. He looked tired—older than his seventy-eight years, the adrenaline of the confrontation visibly draining from his frame.

Emily rushed around the desk, taking his arm to steady him. "Harold, sit down. Let me get you some water."

"I'm fine, my dear," he chuckled weakly, sinking into the leather armchair. He looked up at her with profound, weary affection. "You handled yourself well tonight. Arthur would have been very proud."

"You knew Julian was coming," Emily realized, her eyes searching his face. "You set the trap."

"We've been tracking Julian's shell companies for six months," Harold admitted, leaning his head back against the chair. "He wanted those Queens proxy shares because they represent the controlling vote in Donovan Holdings. He thought he could outsmart an old man. He didn't realize the shares were never in the foundation."

Emily frowned. "Where are they?"

Harold reached into his breast pocket, pulling out a sealed, heavy cream envelope bearing a red wax seal, and handed it across the desk.

"They were transferred into your name the day your divorce from Ethan was finalized," Harold said softly. "You aren't just an executive of the foundation, Emily. You are the majority shareholder of Donovan Holdings."

Emily stared at the envelope. Her hands trembled as she broke the seal, pulling out the legal deeds and proxy certificates bearing her own signature—Emily Brooks.
