Chapter 19 - Whispers of the Past

That evening, Emily drove out to Queens to visit St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

Her mother, Linda Brooks, was completely cancer-free, her strength fully restored, tending to a small garden box outside the recovery ward with the help of Dr. Evans.

Emily walked across the courtyard, the evening sun casting a golden glow over the maple trees.

"Look at these tomatoes, Emmy!" Linda laughed, brushing dirt off her gardening gloves. "Dr. Evans says they'll be ready to pick by July."

"They look wonderful, Mom," Emily smiled, crouching down beside her mother and wrapping her arms around her shoulders.

As they walked back toward the parking lot together, Linda glanced sideways at her daughter. "I heard about the board meeting today. You're officially the head of the entire company, aren't you?"

Emily smiled, looking out toward the Manhattan skyline rising in the distance. "I am."

"And Ethan?" Linda asked softly, the name barely more than a whisper.

" Ethan is serving year one of a fifteen-year sentence in federal prison," Emily replied calmly. "Jocelyn is living off consignment sales in a cramped apartment in Brooklyn. They don't exist in my world anymore, Mom."

Linda squeezed her hand. "Good. Because the world you've built is far too bright for ghosts."
