Chapter 8 - A Mother's Smile

That afternoon, Emily walked into Room 412 of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital.

The room was no longer the bleak, sterile cell she remembered from a week ago. Through Harold's intervention, it had been upgraded to a private luxury suite overlooking a quiet courtyard filled with golden autumn maple trees.

Linda Brooks was propped up in bed, looking paler than she had months ago, but her eyes—those bright, familiar eyes—were clear and alert. A vase of fresh white lilies sat on the bedside table.

"Mom," Emily whispered, stepping into the room.

Linda turned her head, a weak but radiant smile spreading across her face. "Emmy... look at you. You look... different. Lighter."

Emily walked over, gently taking her mother's thin, frail hand in her own and pressing a warm kiss to her knuckles.

"I am lighter, Mom," Emily said, a tear slipping down her cheek, but this time, she was smiling. "I'm completely free."

Linda squeezed her hand. "The hospital administrator came by this morning. He said... he said all my treatments are fully paid for. For the next two years. Private doctors, specialized therapy, everything. He said a man named Harold Donovan arranged it."

"He did," Emily said softly, pulling up a chair beside the bed. "He's an old friend of Grandpa's. He brought us home, Mom."

Linda looked at her daughter, studying her face with the profound intuition only a mother possessed. "And Ethan?"

Emily let out a quiet, melodic laugh—a sound she hadn't made in years.

"Ethan is gone, Mom. He's never coming back. And neither is the life we left behind."

Linda reached up, gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind Emily's ear. "Then let's start a new one."
