Chapter 3 - The Trap Closes

Ethan took a step back, hitting the solid, unyielding chest of the security guard behind him. He spun around, panic flaring in his eyes as he looked at the massive guard, then back at Harold.

"What are you talking about?" Ethan shouted, his voice cracking. "The contract is signed! The money is in my account! You can't trap us here! That's kidnapping! That's false imprisonment!"

"It's not imprisonment, Mr. Cole," a new voice entered the room.

A tall, impeccably dressed woman in a charcoal pantsuit stepped out from the adjoining corridor, holding a thick leather portfolio. It was Victoria Vance, senior partner at Vance & Sterling Corporate Law. Emily recognized her name from the footer of the divorce documents.

Victoria opened the portfolio, pulling out a single sheet of paper covered in dense legal text.

"Section 9, Paragraph 4 of the settlement agreement you signed twenty minutes ago, Mr. Cole," Victoria recited smoothly, adjusting her gold-rimmed glasses. "Specifically the anti-dissipation and anti-recourse clause. It stipulates that any funds transferred under the guise of a marital buyout remain subject to forensic audit for a period of forty-eight hours to ensure no fraudulent concealment of joint marital assets exists."

Ethan stared at her, his brain scrambling to parse the legalese. "What does that mean in English?!"

"It means," Harold said, stepping closer, his voice dropping to a low, dangerous growl, "your two million dollars is currently sitting in an escrow holding account controlled by my firm. It has not hit your personal checking account. It is merely a digital ping confirming the transfer into escrow."

Ethan felt the blood drain entirely from his face. He lunged toward his pocket, ripping his phone out and tapping the banking app.

The balance update was there, but beside it, a small, blinking red icon read: PENDING ESCROW VERIFICATION - FUNDS LOCKED SUBJECT TO AUDIT.

"You tricked me!" Ethan screamed, lunging forward with his fists clenched.

He didn't even make it two steps.

The security guard behind him moved with terrifying speed. A massive hand clamped around Ethan's shoulder, spinning him around and slamming him face-first against the heavy oak bookshelf. Ethan grunted as the wind was knocked out of him, his cheek pressed flat against a leather-bound encyclopedia.

"Let go of me! Mom! Call the police!" Ethan choked out.

Jocelyn shrieked, rushing forward to claw at the guard's arm. "Unhand my son, you thugs! Do you know who we are?! We'll sue you into the stone age!"

Melinda stepped into Jocelyn's path with a serene, terrifying calmness, holding out a silver tray. "Sit down, Mrs. Cole. The police are already on their way. Or rather, the state tax fraud division is."

Jocelyn froze, her manicured claws hovering an inch from Melinda's face. "Tax... tax fraud?"

Victoria Vance adjusted her portfolio, looking over her glasses at Jocelyn with utter disdain. "Mr. Cole's gambling debts over the past three years total over 1.4 million dollars, funded largely through undeclared corporate loans from his employer's subsidiary accounts—embezzlement, in simpler terms. Furthermore, the two million dollars he accepted today constitutes a taxable corporate transaction under his shell company in Delaware, which he failed to declare."

Victoria looked up at Ethan, who was still pinned against the bookshelf, shaking like a leaf.

"In short, Mr. Cole, you just signed a confession while taking my client's money."
