Chapter 5 - The Arrest

Two federal marshals, accompanied by local Westchester police officers, strode into the library. The lead officer, a tall detective with graying temples named Sergeant Miller, scanned the room before locking his eyes onto Ethan.

"Ethan Cole?" the detective asked, flashing his shield.

"This is a mistake! It's a setup!" Ethan screamed, thrashing against the security guard holding him. "They drugged me! They forged the papers! I'm a victim here!"

The security guard released Ethan's arm, shoving him forward toward the marshals. Within seconds, cold steel cuffs clicked around Ethan's wrists.

Jocelyn rushed forward, grabbing the detective's sleeve. "You can't arrest him! Do you know who we are?! My husband was a senior VP at—"

"Ma'am, step back or you'll be joining your son in the back of the cruiser for obstruction of justice," Sergeant Miller warned, his voice flat and unyielding.

Victoria Vance stepped forward, handing a thick manila folder to the detective. "Sergeant. Here are the certified bank records, the wire transfer logs detailing the embezzlement from the engineering firm's subsidiary accounts, and the signed confession acknowledging receipt of illicit funds."

Detective Miller flipped open the folder, scanned the first page, and raised an eyebrow. He looked at Ethan, who was sputtering incoherent denials, then looked over at Harold and Emily.

"Looks like a very thorough evening, Mr. Donovan," the detective noted dryly.

"Just cleaning up the neighborhood, Sergeant," Harold replied smoothly.

As Ethan was dragged out of the library, his voice echoing down the grand hallway in a pathetic wail of denial and rage—"Mom! Do something! Call a lawyer!"—Jocelyn slumped into a chair, staring blankly at the floor as the harsh reality of their ruin finally settled in.

Melinda walked over to her with a polite, glacial smile. "Shall I call a cab for you, Mrs. Cole? Or would you prefer to walk out in the rain?"

Jocelyn didn't answer. She just covered her face with her trembling hands and wept.
