Chapter 1 - The Color of TerrorThe color drained from Ethan’s face so fast it looked like pale wax. The polished, unshakeable corporate facade cracked down the middle, revealing the shivering coward beneath.

"Kitchen security camera?" Ethan stammered, taking half a step backward. His immaculate suit jacket bunched awkwardly at his shoulders as he tried to regain his footing. "That’s... that’s absurd. We don’t have a camera in the kitchen. It’s a privacy violation, or—"

"Or a brilliant safety feature," Dr. Rachel Carter interrupted smoothly, her voice cutting through the sterile hum of the hospital monitors. She didn't blink. She had spent years analyzing testimony in mock trials, and Ethan was sweating through his expensive designer shirt. "Especially for a smart woman living in a house with dangerous hazards. The feed streams directly to an encrypted cloud server. Every drop of boiling oil, every word your mother snarled, and every step you took over your wife's collapsing body has been downloaded by the cybercrime division."

Margaret tried to barge past the curtain, her heavy purse swinging like a weapon. "Lies! She set us up! That ungrateful leech planned this from the start to ruin my boy!"

Before Margaret could lunge further, two uniformed police officers parted the privacy curtain. Their heavy boots thudded against the linoleum floor. The metallic glint of handcuffs caught the fluorescent hospital light.

"Ethan Miller? Margaret Miller?" the lead detective asked, his voice flat and authoritative. "Step away from the bed, please. You are both being detained for questioning regarding an aggravated assault with a deadly chemical agent."

Ethan opened his mouth to protest, to drop the name of a corrupt city councilman or a bribed judge, but the detective didn't give him room to breathe.

"And Mr. Miller?" The detective leaned in, a cold smirk touching his lips. "You might want to call your financial institutions on the way down. Apparently, your assets have just been frozen under an emergency federal injunction."

Ethan froze. The color didn't just drain; it vanished entirely. He looked toward the hospital bed, his eyes widening in mounting terror as a pale, bandaged hand slowly pushed back the curtain. I looked him dead in the eye, offering the exact same cold, empty smile he had given me as I lay bleeding on the kitchen floor.
