Chapter 10 - THE FINAL CHECKMATE

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the sky in shades of bruised purple and gold as I drove back to the house—my house. The driveway was clear, the porch light was warm and welcoming, and the sound of my children laughing in the kitchen drifted out through the open windows.

As I stepped through the front door, the mail sat neatly on the entry table. Right on top was a thick white envelope bearing the court’s official seal: the final, irrevocable decree of our divorce, granting me full custody, the primary estate, and absolute financial independence.

I picked up the envelope, walked into the kitchen where Arthur, Kelly, and Leo were setting the dinner table, and dropped it straight into the recycling bin without even opening it. Some chapters of life don't deserve a second read; they only deserve to be closed, burned, and left behind in the dark.
