Chapter 23 - THE FINAL MIRROR

Luca took a stumbling step forward, his eyes welling up with tears he refused to let fall. “I thought I was being smart. I thought I was securing our future. Why didn't you stop me earlier? Why didn't you scream at me when you first found out?”

“Because screaming is for people who think they can still negotiate with a liar,” I replied, looking him dead in the eye. “You didn't want a partner, Luca. You wanted an audience for your ambitions. And when the math finally caught up with you, you blamed everyone except the man in the mirror.”

He flinched as if I had struck him physically. The brutal honesty of my words seemed to crush whatever fragile denial he had been clinging to for the past three years.

“Is this what you wanted?” he whispered, his voice trembling violently. “To see me destroyed?”

“I didn't destroy you, Luca,” I said softly. “I simply stopped protecting you from the consequences of your own choices. You built a house of cards in a hurricane, and you’re angry that the wind blew it down.”

I didn't wait for him to answer. I stepped past him, walking smoothly along the paved path toward the warm, glowing lights of my home, leaving him standing alone in the gathering dusk.
