Chapter 3 - THE CORPORATE COUP

The first crack in Luca’s carefully constructed façade appeared during a quarterly board meeting at Vance Industrial Distribution. Arthur, despite his frail health, insisted on attending via video feed from his private study. Luca sat at the head of the mahogany table, whispering condescending remarks to his vice president about how his father was merely a relic holding back modernization.

“We need to streamline operations, pivot away from regional manufacturing, and liquidate the older warehouses,” Luca announced to the board, leaning forward with an air of unearned authority. “My father’s generation is too sentimental. Once the transition of power is finalized next month, I will officially assume the CEO title and execute these sales.”

A heavy silence fell over the room. Rachel Vance, sitting quietly near the back with a leather briefcase, slowly stood up.

“There will be no liquidation, Luca,” Rachel said, her voice cutting through the tension like a scalpel.

Luca scoffed, flashing a condescending smile at his cousin. “Excuse me, Rachel? I think I know what my father’s succession plan entails. My name is on the primary lineage documents.”

“Your name was on them,” Arthur’s voice boomed from the wall-mounted speakers, startling everyone in the room. The old man sounded weaker than usual, but his words carried the terrifying authority of a titan. “Effective this morning, Luca, your executive clearance has been revoked. You are no longer Senior Vice President. Clear your desk by noon.”

Luca’s face drained of color. He stood up so fast his chair slammed backward against the wood paneling. “You can’t do that! I am your son! This company belongs to me!”

“It belongs to those who respect it,” Arthur replied coldly before cutting the feed.
