Chapter 24 - THE THRESHOLD OF TOMORROW

When I unlocked the front door, the rich aroma of roasted garlic and rosemary drifted from the kitchen. Arthur was sitting at the dining table, helping Leo build a complex mechanical model for his science fair, while Kelly was upstairs finishing her college prep applications.

“Everything alright outside, sweetheart?” Arthur asked, looking up as I hung my coat on the brass rack.

“Just a ghost from the past, Arthur,” I smiled, walking over to kiss the old man on his forehead. “He’s completely gone now.”

Arthur nodded slowly, a warm, proud smile touching the corners of his mouth. “Some people spend their whole lives chasing ghosts, Jessi. Only the wise realize that the future is built by the hands holding the present.”

I walked into the kitchen, poured myself a glass of sparkling water, and looked out the large picture window facing the front lawn. The sidewalk was empty. The shadows had cleared.

My phone buzzed one last time on the counter. It was a calendar reminder for tomorrow morning’s board meeting, where Kelly would be joining us as an official junior observer.

I swiped the notification away, took a long, refreshing sip, and walked upstairs to check on my children. The story that had nearly broken my family had long since ended, and the life I had built in its place was entirely, beautifully, unconditionally mine.
