Chapter 19 - THE SILENT PASSING

For three agonizing seconds, the world around us seemed to freeze. The symphony of clinking crystal, laughing investors, and orchestral jazz faded into a dull background hum.
Luca took a hesitant half-step forward, his lips parting as if he wanted to speak, to beg, to claim some shred of our shared history. He looked at the million-dollar ballroom, at the magazine reporters waiting by my side, at the diamond-studded corporate pin gleaming on my lapel—and then he looked down at his tray of dirty glasses.
