Arthur Vance did not summon Luca to a dramatic boardroom confrontation. He played the long game. Over the next three weeks, Luca grew bolder, spending fewer nights at home and more time weaving fantasies of wealth with Chloe. Every weekend, while Luca claimed to be sitting vigil at his father’s hospital bedside, he was actually wining and dining his mistress at five-star resorts, charging the bills to a shared corporate account he thought I would never audit.
I played my part to perfection. I packed his lunches, managed our children’s school functions, and greeted him with a polite, vacant smile whenever he deigned to grace our house with his presence. Deep inside, the gears were turning. Arthur had secretly handed me a digital copy of his newly amended estate trust via a secure flash drive. The document was a masterpiece of legal engineering. Luca would still inherit the family home—the very house we lived in—because Arthur knew Luca would demand it as his primary trophy. But the Vance Industrial Distribution empire, the multi-million-dollar offshore accounts, and the controlling shares of the corporation were partitioned entirely away. They were placed into an irrevocable blind trust managed by Rachel Vance, designated for Kelly and Leo upon their eighteenth birthdays, with me as the sole legal custodian and executor.
Luca had no idea he was running a marathon toward a finish line that had already been erased.
