Chapter 16 - THE FINAL AUDIT

By early spring, the corporate restructuring of Vance Industrial Distribution was officially complete. We had successfully acquired two regional competitors, expanded our green-energy logistics division by three hundred percent, and appointed a brand-new board of directors entirely free of legacy nepotism.

Rachel Vance called me into her executive office late one Friday afternoon to review the final legal closure of Luca’s employment and asset forfeiture files.

“It’s officially done, Jessi,” Rachel said, sliding a thick leather-bound dossier across her glass desk. “All corporate accounts have been fully reconciled. The embezzlement claims have been settled through the liquidation of his personal assets, and his social security garnishments are locked in place for the next seven years.”

I opened the folder, scanned the final settlement signature, and closed it with a quiet, satisfying snap.

“He called my office yesterday,” Rachel added casually, watching my reaction. “Begging for a letter of recommendation for a junior sales gig in another state. I told him to check his spam folder.”

“He always did expect everyone else to clean up his messes,” I replied, standing up and smoothing my blazer. “Let’s leave him to it.”
