Chapter 21 - THE ECHO OF A WHISPER

The morning sun cast a sharp, golden light across my office desk. Three years had passed since the night I discovered Luca’s betrayal, yet the memory remained as clear as polished glass. Vance Industrial Distribution was now the undisputed leader in sustainable logistics, and my position as COO was cemented by record-breaking quarterly profits.

Arthur Vance, though frail, still made his weekly Tuesday appearances at the headquarters. He no longer worried about supply contracts or hostile takeovers; his entire focus was dedicated to mentoring Kelly, who spent her high school breaks shadowing our corporate legal division.

My phone buzzed against the mahogany surface. It was an interoffice memo from human resources regarding routine security clearances. But tucked beneath it was an unexpected notification from a local municipal court—a formal archive request tied to Luca's ongoing bankruptcy and wage garnishment proceedings.

I opened the document out of sheer administrative habit. Luca had filed a final, desperate motion for debt relief, claiming complete destitution and listing his current employment as a night-shift inventory clerk at a suburban warehouse. The man who once believed he was destined to inherit an empire was now sleeping in a cramped, damp basement apartment three zip codes away, completely erased from the corporate world he had tried to manipulate.
