Chapter 6 - THE MISTRESS’S TRUE COLORS

Desperate and cornered, Luca grabbed his phone from his pocket and dialed Chloe right there in the kitchen, putting it on speakerphone before I could stop him.

The phone rang three times before a sharp, annoyed voice answered. “Luca? What took you so long? I’m waiting at the restaurant. If you’re late again, I’m ordering the Dom Pérignon without you.”

“Chloe, listen to me,” Luca stammered, his bravado entirely vanished. “We have a problem. The old man cut me off. The company, the estate… it’s all gone. They locked me out of the accounts.”

Silence stretched across the line. For five long seconds, the only sound was the hum of the refrigerator.

“What do you mean, it’s all gone?” Chloe’s voice dropped its playful lilt, turning razor-sharp and cold.

“My dad changed his will. He gave everything to the kids and Jessi,” Luca pleaded, his voice cracking with humiliation. “We need to lay low for a while. Your apartment… can I stay with you for a few days until I figure this out?”

“Stay with me?” Chloe shrieked, the volume shocking both of us. “Are you out of your mind? I didn’t spend two years sleeping with a married corporate executive to share a studio apartment with a broke, unemployed loser! If you don’t have the money, why are you even calling me?”

“Chloe, baby, wait—we love each other, remember?” Luca cried, his dignity completely evaporating as he clutched the phone.

“We loved your inheritance, Luca. Not you,” she snapped.
