Chapter 1 - The Foundation of SandRichard Coleman’s voice filled Courtroom 14 with the rich, resonant cadence of a man accustomed to winning before he even stepped before a judge. He spoke of Whitmore Development Group as an architectural monument built entirely by Daniel’s solitary vision, late nights, and unyielding grit.

Clare listened quietly, her fingers resting lightly on the edge of the twelve-dollar brown folder. She remembered those late nights differently. She remembered the dining room table buried under loan applications, municipal zoning codes, and tax returns she had spent hours reconciling while Daniel slept. She remembered drafting the original incorporation papers when Daniel didn't even know what an LLC operating agreement looked like.

Coleman reached his crescendo, smoothing his burgundy tie. "Your Honor, Mr. Whitmore is prepared to offer a fair, equitable spousal support package—two thousand dollars monthly for twenty-four months, along with the equity buyout of their suburban home, valued at a standard depreciation rate. It is generous, given Mrs. Whitmore's complete absence of corporate contribution."

Judge Holloway turned her gaze toward Clare. "Mrs. Whitmore, your response to the opening statement?"

Clare stood up. Her hands no longer trembled. She straightened her navy dress, looked directly at Judge Holloway, and then cast a single, calm glance at her husband.

"Thank you, Your Honor," Clare said, her voice clear, even, and carrying effortlessly across the quiet room. "Mr. Coleman is correct about one thing: Whitmore Development Group is a multi-million-dollar portfolio. But the foundation he speaks of was not built by my husband alone. In fact, the very financial statements submitted to this court by the plaintiff omit forty percent of our actual marital assets."

Daniel scoffed openly this time, leaning over to whisper something sharp to his lead junior associate.

Coleman didn't blink. "Objection, Your Honor. Speculation without foundational expert witness testimony."

"Sustained," Judge Holloway ruled promptly. "Mrs. Whitmore, you must lay a proper foundation before making substantive claims regarding corporate asset valuation."

"Understood, Your Honor," Clare replied without missing a beat. "I call my first witness: Daniel Whitmore."
