Chapter 16 - The Gala of a New EraThe grand ballroom of the Palmer House Hilton was breathtaking. Crystal chandeliers cast warm, glittering light across hundreds of Chicago’s most influential attorneys, judges, corporate executives, and civic leaders.

Clare stood near the grand staircase, wearing a stunning midnight-blue silk evening gown that hugged her silhouette with effortless elegance, complemented by diamond-drop earrings that caught the light with every movement.

Marcus approached her, holding a glass of sparkling mineral water. "You know, looking at this crowd, I’d say about half of these people are here because they admire you, and the other half are terrified you're going to audit their books before midnight."

Clare laughed softly, taking the glass. "Let them be inspired, Marcus. As for the rest—if their books are clean, they have nothing to fear."

Judge Margaret Holloway, retired from the bench and now serving as a senior judicial arbitrator, walked over with a warm, approving smile.

"Clare," the older woman said, her silver hair gleaming beneath the chandeliers. "I must confess, when you walked into Courtroom 14 with that worn brown folder, I wondered if you understood the magnitude of what you were stepping into."

"I knew exactly what I was stepping into, Judge Holloway," Clare replied respectfully, clinking her glass against the retired judge's champagne flute. "I was stepping out of a cage."

"You did more than that," Holloway noted warmly. "You reminded an entire profession that justice isn't about how expensive your legal team is, or how loud your attorneys shout. It’s about the unyielding weight of the truth."
