Chapter 2 - The First Crack in the ArmorThe courtroom went dead silent. Richard Coleman blinked in genuine surprise, quickly glancing at his client. Daniel’s mocking expression flickered, replaced by a flash of annoyance as he pushed his chair back and stood up.

"Your Honor, this is highly irregular," Coleman protested, standing half-up. "Plaintiff’s counsel has not even completed our presentation of the corporate ledger."

"Rule 406 permits adverse witness testimony at any stage of trial proceedings, Mr. Coleman," Judge Holloway stated calmly, peering over her reading glasses. "Step to the witness stand, Mr. Whitmore."

Daniel walked toward the witness box with forced swagger, adjusting his custom-tailored suit jacket. He sat down, offering the court clerk a brief, dismissive smile before turning his eyes onto Clare with cold contempt.

Clare stepped up to the podium, opening her worn twelve-dollar folder. She didn't have a legal team, a laptop, or an army of associates. She had truth, and she had paper.

"Mr. Whitmore," Clare began, her tone conversational yet razor-sharp. "Directing your attention to November fourteenth of last year—do you recognize this document?"

She handed a single sheet of paper to the bailiff, who placed it before the witness.

Daniel glanced down at it casually. "It's a standard internal balance sheet for Whitmore Development Group. Yes."

"Is that your signature at the bottom?"

"It is."

"And does that balance sheet reflect a total asset valuation of four million, two hundred thousand dollars?"

"Yes."
