Chapter 7 - Stepping Into the LightThe sleet had stopped outside the courthouse by the time Clare walked down the massive stone steps into the crisp afternoon air. The Chicago skyline gleamed beneath a break in the heavy gray clouds, catching the bright afternoon sunlight and reflecting it across the wet pavement.

Marcus waited for her at the base of the steps, holding a classic black umbrella, though the rain had cleared.

As Clare descended, she took a deep breath of the cold, clean air. For thirteen years, she had felt small, invisible, and confined within the narrow margins of someone else's ego. Today, she walked with her head held high, her charcoal coat swinging gently against her navy dress.

"Well, Madam CEO and sole proprietor," Marcus said with a warm, respectful smile as she reached the bottom step. "Where to first? Celebration dinner, or back to the executive suites?"

Clare smiled—a genuine, radiant smile that reached her eyes, erasing every trace of the quiet endurance she had carried for so long.
