Chapter 23 - The Counter-TrapThe following morning at 9:00 AM sharp, Julian Thorne strode into Clare’s executive office. He wore an expression of aggressive corporate confidence, carrying a leather folio tucked firmly under his arm.

"Ms. Bennett," Julian began, his tone patronizingly polite. "I trust you’ve reconsidered your hasty freeze on the Aegis acquisition. Our European investors are threatening to pull funding if we delay the signing another twenty-four hours."
Clare sat behind her desk, calmly reviewing a stack of printed financial summaries. She didn't look up immediately, letting the suffocating silence stretch out for several uncomfortable seconds.
"Sit down, Julian," Clare commanded softly.
Julian hesitated, then sat down in the guest chair opposite her desk. "This delay is costing us millions—"
"It’s costing you your freedom, Julian," Clare interrupted, sliding a single sheet of paper across the desk.
Julian glanced down at the paper. It was a certified international arrest warrant issued by the joint financial crimes task force of Interpol and the United States Department of Justice, co-signed by the federal magistrate in Chicago.
All the color instantly drained from Julian’s face. He tried to speak, but his voice caught in his throat.
"You didn't just inherit Arthur Pendelton's playbook," Clare continued, her voice steady and unyielding. "You inherited his offshore accounts, his Delaware shell registrations, and his exact routing signatures. My compliance team tracked every single transfer from the moment you stepped foot into our London office."
Before Julian could react or reach toward his briefcase, the heavy oak doors of the office swung open. Two British federal police officers in crisp uniforms stepped inside, flanking Special Agent Vance, who had flown in overnight.
"Julian Thorne," Special Agent Vance announced, stepping forward with cold authority. "You are under arrest for international wire fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy to commit corporate infiltration."

As the heavy steel handcuffs snapped onto Julian’s wrists, he looked at Clare with a mixture of terror and unadulterated venom. "You think you're untouchable! You're just a woman playing a high-stakes game you don't understand!"
"No, Julian," Clare said quietly, standing up and smoothing the lapel of her charcoal blazer. "I’m not playing a game. I’m balancing the ledger."
