Chapter 15 - The InvitationThat evening, as Clare reviewed the final financial ledgers for the third-quarter fiscal review in her office, her desk phone chimed with a secure internal line.

"Ms. Bennett," her executive assistant announced. "There is an official letter delivered by courier from the Chicago Bar Association. They’re requesting your presence as the keynote speaker at their annual ethics and jurisprudence symposium next month."

Clare looked up from her monitor, surprised. The Chicago Bar Association was notoriously conservative, historically dominated by old-guard legal dynasties and corporate defense giants—the very circles that had once viewed her as an invisible homemaker.

"Did they specify why my name was put forward, Sarah?" Clare asked.

"According to the letter, the selection committee unanimously voted to invite you based on your landmark self-representation and subsequent systemic restructuring of corporate compliance standards," Sarah replied. "They called you 'the auditor who rewrote civil jurisprudence in Illinois.'"

A slow, genuine smile touched Clare’s lips.

"Accept the invitation, Sarah," Clare instructed smoothly. "And let’s schedule a meeting with the corporate compliance division for tomorrow morning. I want us to draft a pro-bono legal aid fund for victims of corporate financial abuse."

Marcus, who had been leaning against the doorway reviewing architectural renders, whistled softly. "A pro-bono fund targeting financial abusers? That’s going to ruffle some feathers in the traditional corporate community."

"Good," Clare said, locking her computer screen and standing up to grab her designer leather jacket. "Feathers were meant to be ruffled if they're covering up dirt."
