Chapter 18 - A Visitor in the DarkThe heavy security doors of the federal penitentiary in Florence hissed open, admitting a single visitor into the high-security consultation booth.

Brandon Prescott sat on the other side of the thick bulletproof glass, his face gaunt, his orange jumpsuit hanging loosely off his thin frame. When he looked up and saw who was standing on the other side, his breath hitched.
Victoria stood tall, wearing an immaculate white cashmere coat, her sunglasses folded in her hand. Her eyes were calm, devoid of anger—which was infinitely more terrifying than rage.
Brandon stumbled forward, slamming his palms against the glass. "Victoria!" he screamed, his voice cracking through the intercom speaker. "Get me out of here! Please! They’re starving me, they’re treating me like an animal!"
Victoria didn't flinch. She picked up the black telephone receiver, leaning in close.
"I came to tell you something, Brandon," she said, her voice smooth and chillingly serene.
"What?" he sobbed, tears streaming down his hollow cheeks. "What else could you possibly want?"
"Today, the last remaining building bearing your family name was demolished," Victoria replied softly. "Your bank accounts are empty. Your mother's estate was seized under federal RICO statutes. Legally, Brandon Prescott no longer exists."

Brandon stared at her in utter horror. "You... you destroyed everything."
"No, Brandon," Victoria corrected, hanging up the receiver with a sharp click. "I just finished the game you started."
