Chapter 9 - Ashes to EmpireTwo weeks after the trial concluded, I stood alone on the wraparound balcony of my late father’s estate. The morning breeze carried the crisp scent of pine and saltwater from the bay, washing away the lingering sterile smell of hospital antiseptic.

The keys to the house—the real ones, untouched and securely held in the family trust—rested heavily in my palm.

Downstairs, movers were hauling away the last remnants of Ethan’s wardrobe, loading the designer suits, monogrammed shirts, and polished leather shoes into a generic donation truck. Nothing of his would remain in these rooms. Every trace of his existence was being systematically wiped clean, replaced by the original artwork, legal texts, and family heirlooms he had tried so hard to force into storage.

My phone buzzed on the glass patio table.

It was a text from Dr. Rachel Carter: “Legal restructuring complete. The investment firm has officially been renamed ‘Sterling Asset Recovery.’ First board meeting is tomorrow at nine. Are you ready, Madam CEO?”

I looked out across the horizon where the sun was breaking through the heavy morning fog, painting the sky in brilliant shades of gold and amber.

The pain on my skin was fading into pale, silvery scars—permanent reminders of what happens when someone mistakes a woman's silence for weakness. But scars don't make you fragile. They make you armor.

I picked up the phone, unlocked the screen, and typed my reply:

"Always was. Let's go to work."
