Chapter 3 - The Queen’s GambitBack in the hospital VIP suite—upgraded courtesy of a very apologetic hospital board once they realized who I was—Dr. Rachel Carter adjusted my IV drip while reviewing the latest police briefings.

"The local precinct is executing search warrants on both of your residential properties as we speak," Rachel said, tossing a tablet onto the mattress. "Margaret is having a full-blown hysterical breakdown in the holding cell, screaming that her son is a genius who can't be touched."
I looked down at my bandaged hands, feeling the tight pull of the healing skin. The physical pain was severe, but beneath it burned a cold, clarifying focus.
"She thinks Ethan is invincible because he’s spent a decade buying protection in this city," I said, my voice steady. "Every corrupt official, every compromised auditor, every backdoor deal—he documented most of them himself on his private cloud drive. Did the cyber team secure the secondary server?"
"Mirrored and downloaded," Rachel grinned, pulling up a decrypted file folder. "Including the hidden folders containing his slush funds, shell companies in the Cayman Islands, and the paper trail linking him directly to the embezzlement of your father's medical trust funds."
Everything was falling into place. Ethan had spent years constructing an elaborate cage of financial abuse, emotional gaslighting, and isolation, believing he had locked me safely inside. But cages require locks, and the person holding the master key had never lost it.

My father had warned me, years before he passed, that vultures would circle the moment he was gone. He had looked at Ethan during a Sunday dinner, watched how my husband subtly undermined every word I spoke, and quietly handed me a second set of keys to the family estate—the ones that couldn't be forged, altered, or stolen by a greedy spouse.
"It's time to invite the media," I said softly, looking toward the window where the first morning light was breaking over the city skyline. "If we’re going to dismantle his empire, let's do it in broad daylight where his wealthy friends can watch every brick crumble."
