Chapter 14 - The Hidden Blueprint in the AtticThat evening, defeated and exhausted, I sat alone in the dark study of the mansion. The rain battered against the tall bay windows, creating a melancholic rhythm that echoed my heavy heart.

I needed a miracle. Or at least, a loophole.
I stood up and began pacing the room, my fingers brushing against the shelves filled with Ernest's old engineering manuals. Suddenly, my hand caught on a loose wooden panel behind the globe stand in the corner of the room. A hidden latch.
With a gentle click, a narrow staircase revealed itself—a spiral iron staircase leading straight up into the dark, forgotten attic of the mansion. Ernest had never mentioned an attic.
Grabbing a heavy brass flashlight from the desk, I stepped onto the cold metal steps and climbed up into the dusty shadows.
The beam of my flashlight swept across rows of covered furniture, old steamer trunks, and boxes of vintage drafting tools. But in the center of the room sat a massive wooden drafting table, untouched by dust, covered under a clear plastic tarp.
I pulled the tarp back.
Spread out across the table was not just one set of blueprints, but an entire legal portfolio labeled in Ernest's sharp, elegant handwriting: 'THE CONTINGENCY PLAN - TO WHOM IT MAY CONCERN.'
I flipped open the heavy folder. Inside was a legal deed dated 1985, stamped and certified by the federal government, along with a personal handwritten letter addressed to me.
"Laura," the letter began. "If you are reading this, it means the city council and my spineless sons tried to steal Clara's land for commercial greed. They think zoning laws can crush a vision. They forgot that I helped design the city's main infrastructure back in 1970. Read the attached federal covenant. The land isn't subject to local municipal zoning—it's classified as a federal historical sanctuary protected by the Department of the Interior. Try putting a parking garage over federal preservation rights, Councilman Reed."

A breathless laugh escaped my lips. Ernest had outsmarted them from beyond the grave by forty years!
