Chapter 8 - The Safe Behind the BookshelfErnest walked slowly toward the towering mahogany bookshelf lining the back wall of the study. He reached out, his gnarled fingers gripping the spine of a massive, leather-bound copy of War and Peace. With a firm tug, the entire section of the shelf swung inward with a heavy, oiled click, revealing a steel wall safe set deep into the brickwork of the mansion's original foundation.

"My father built this house in 1945," Ernest muttered, working the combination dial with practiced precision: Right 24, Left 12, Right 68.

The heavy steel door swung open, releasing a cool puff of air that smelled of old parchment, dried lavender, and metal.

Inside sat a stack of documents, a small velvet jewelry box, and a rolled-up set of architectural blueprints tied with a faded red ribbon.

"Take them," Ernest instructed, gesturing for me to reach inside.

My fingers brushed against the cool metal and the soft velvet. I pulled out the blueprints first, unrolling them gently on the edge of the desk. Under the warm lamplight, intricate ink lines revealed the design of a community architectural center—a school for underprivileged women and young artists, designed by Clara Walker in 1972, but never built.

Across the bottom corner, written in bold handwriting, was a note: 'To whoever finds this when the walls finally crumble: build it.'

"Clara spent her entire life dreaming of this place," Ernest said softly, his voice growing fainter as he lowered himself back into his armchair. "She wanted to give women a place to run to, instead of just running away from. But life got in the way. Regret got in the way. I spent forty years trying to keep her locked in a cage of my own design, and she spent forty years wishing she had flown higher."

He looked up at me, his gray eyes shining with unshed tears. "I can't build it now, Laura. But you can. You have her mind, her hands, and now... you have the resources."

Before I could answer, a loud, violent pounding echoed through the front hallway of the mansion.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

"Open this door right now!" a harsh, familiar voice roared through the heavy oak panels. "Laura! I know you're in there, you ungrateful witch! Open up before I kick this door off its hinges!"
